Chapter 12

Carol fumed the entire way back.

Her fingers itched to clutch her camera. As the three of them walked back toward her house, her eye caught several gorgeous tableaus she would have snapped photos of if she had the chance. She stuffed her hands in her pocket, trying not to think too hard about it.

“Are the officers here always like that?” Terri asked. “They can’t be very good policemen if they are.”

“Most of the time, they aren’t that bad,” Paul said. “Those two seem to be an exception to the rule. The people I know on the force tend to be a bit more understanding.” He took a deep sigh. “The problem is, none of them are the ones running the case, so we can’t rely on them.”

“Joy,” Carol muttered.

They reached the house in silence, each of them lost in their own thoughts, though Carol was positive they were all mulling over the case in their own way. She herself had so many swimming thoughts about the situation

She marched into the house, trying not to slam the door as she closed it behind her guests. Trying to get her temper under control after the police had taken her camera and been otherwise useless, she took a deep breath, closing her eyes and savoring the cool air of the house, grateful to at least be indoors after the warm walk back to their house.

“Do you think you have your photos on the cloud?” Paul asked. “Did you ever look at them on your computer?”

Carol furrowed her brow as she tried to remember. “Maybe? I know I meant to, but with Sarah Jean and Terri yesterday, I didn’t get time to actually look at them on the computer, so I don’t know if I ever actually plugged it in.”

“Sorry,” Terri said. “Probably my fault.”

“Yes, it’s your fault my memory is terrible,” Carol said, nudging her cousin affectionately. “Don’t worry about it, Terri. These things happen.”

“Well, there’s only one way to find out either way,” Paul said. “Let’s see what’s on your computer.”

Terry watched with amazement and something that might have been awe, as if she had never considered something like this. “Really, Carol, I just can’t believe it.” Terri shook her head. “Is this what your life is always like?”

Carol opened her mouth to say no, of course not, but then she stopped to consider. She supposed it had been a rather wild adventure, now that she thought about it.

“It’s definitely not the reason I moved here,” Carol said. “I was expecting a quiet life. I didn’t know that a place called Whispering Haven could have anything like this happen.”

“It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though,” Terri commented. “Sometimes I wish the commune was a little more exciting. The most interesting thing to happen there since I got there was a horse giving birth to twin foals.”

“That seems pretty interesting, to be fair,” Carol commented. She studied her cousin with interest, trying to see if there was any meaning behind the words beyond their surface.
